Day 6-Guys-The guys played Argentina and unfortunately lost 11-17. The Argentines were lacking in the height department but sadly not in skill. Our boys fought a good fight but they soon learned that size doesn’t matter. They played strongly in the first half but slowed down in the second.
Girls-Played another Denmark team losing again they found a bump in the road but luckily filled it by their next game against their last Denmark team representing how much they had learned so far. They were proud of how they played and now had high hopes for the rest of the tournament. Our defence was hot, especially when Becca tossed an opponent into the stands.
After the girls played their games we went to the main court and the boys had a fun game with some players from Denmark during free time. The girls (of course) went searching for their perfect find. To their disappointment most stores close from 1 o’clock until 3 o’clock for siesta. Not to be denied, they waited patiently for stores to open to thank Italy for its hospitality by boosting the national economy.
Day 7- Guys-The boys played their final game of the tournament and fought hard to pull out the W but lost in an exciting second half of play. The game ended with broken hearts for the disappointing record but everyone came out as better individuals and a stronger group. They were proud of how they represented Canada as well as Alberta in the tournament and will come home as experienced players with a better understanding of the game.
Girls- Played their final two games of the tournament with two nail biter games against Hungary and Poland. Against Hungary the girls had a very strong second half truly coming together as a team and showing their newly found understanding of the game. Although it was not a win it was a boost in confidence for next game. Against Poland everyone played as hard as they could and gave everything they had, including an incredible passing play from Molly to Becca to Emily. The game ended in a 9-13 loss, making it the girls’ closest game in the tournament.
During one of the games on the main court we were watching two teams play when they got in an intense fight that involved the entire team. An experience that will not soon be forgotten. Shortly after the team fight, Cole W. jumped in shirtless on a random country’s team picture and got an international purple nurple in front of the entire crowd. We also found am amazing pizza place which gave a new spin on pizza by adding fries on the top of it. It was a good day.
Day 8- The group started the day with a hop in their step knowing today was beach day. Before going to the beach we went to a small old town close to Panito and explored a few churches and did some window shopping. We also found a small playground were we had way to much fun playing on the merry-go-round. After which we jumped back on the bus for the quick ride to the beach were we did some awesome body surfing on the waves worked on our tans (and sunburns) and had some fun. After our “stressful” day we had a fun little scrimmage game which involved the girls’ team with the help of the coaches playing the boys team. Jordan stunned Mike with an amazing display of prowess between the posts. The fun little game ended in a tie, which meant that Mike did not have to buy the entire boys team supper. Afterwards we headed back to the school for supper and some down time before bed. Tomorrow is our last day in Teramo before leaving early Saturday morning.
