Kim Ewanovich Blog#6
Hello,
Not to much to say this week, things have kinda gone back to the way they were a few weeks ago. We have only 8 or 9 girls at practice as well as the motivation is not there at all.
We played an away game this weekend which meant another 7 hr bus ride which for our team usually means playing really bad and loosing really bad... And this weekend wasn't any different.
We played SANFLO MURAT HB they were in behind us in placing but by just one point. After the 7 hr bus ride (and getting lost) we found the gym and were very surprised at the condition of it. The court size was smaller then the normal 20-40m court, the floor was concrete with lines painted on it. The nets were directly against the back wall so to stop the ball from going to far when somebody missed the net the team puts up these foam mattresses (like the ones used for high jump) against the walls. The biggest problem with that was the plastic had been torn on them so there was foam chunks all over the court and when a player missed the net the ball would have foam pieces on it making the ball hard to play with. The president of our club found out that the president of SanFlo Murats club was also on the board of the France Federation of handball so they get away with having teams to play games in this "shit" gym. But shit gym or no shit gym we still lost against a shit team (excuse my french) and there was no reasons or excuses for it.
But that game is over, now we need to focus on next weekends games vs Pays Apt Handball they are in last place with 1 win and 5 losses. It is a home game so as long as we don't play like we did this past weekend we shouldn't have a problem winning (knock on wood).
Tord and i went to watch Toulon play a club from Romania for a game in the handball champions league yesterday and although they lost by a few goals it was a very exciting game. I will start training with Toulon again after next week because the team has been away on games the last week and will be gone again all this week.
Here is a picture of Toulon playing yesterday, we got there kind of late so after finding parking these were the only seats available (first come, first serve).
Bisous

Day 6-Guys-The guys played Argentina and unfortunately lost 11-17. The Argentines were lacking in the height department but sadly not in skill. Our boys fought a good fight but they soon learned that size doesn’t matter. They played strongly in the first half but slowed down in the second.
Girls-Played another Denmark team losing again they found a bump in the road but luckily filled it by their next game against their last Denmark team representing how much they had learned so far. They were proud of how they played and now had high hopes for the rest of the tournament. Our defence was hot, especially when Becca tossed an opponent into the stands.
After the girls played their games we went to the main court and the boys had a fun game with some players from Denmark during free time. The girls (of course) went searching for their perfect find. To their disappointment most stores close from 1 o’clock until 3 o’clock for siesta. Not to be denied, they waited patiently for stores to open to thank Italy for its hospitality by boosting the national economy.
Day 7- Guys-The boys played their final game of the tournament and fought hard to pull out the W but lost in an exciting second half of play. The game ended with broken hearts for the disappointing record but everyone came out as better individuals and a stronger group. They were proud of how they represented Canada as well as Alberta in the tournament and will come home as experienced players with a better understanding of the game.
Girls- Played their final two games of the tournament with two nail biter games against Hungary and Poland. Against Hungary the girls had a very strong second half truly coming together as a team and showing their newly found understanding of the game. Although it was not a win it was a boost in confidence for next game. Against Poland everyone played as hard as they could and gave everything they had, including an incredible passing play from Molly to Becca to Emily. The game ended in a 9-13 loss, making it the girls’ closest game in the tournament.
During one of the games on the main court we were watching two teams play when they got in an intense fight that involved the entire team. An experience that will not soon be forgotten. Shortly after the team fight, Cole W. jumped in shirtless on a random country’s team picture and got an international purple nurple in front of the entire crowd. We also found am amazing pizza place which gave a new spin on pizza by adding fries on the top of it. It was a good day.
Day 8- The group started the day with a hop in their step knowing today was beach day. Before going to the beach we went to a small old town close to Panito and explored a few churches and did some window shopping. We also found a small playground were we had way to much fun playing on the merry-go-round. After which we jumped back on the bus for the quick ride to the beach were we did some awesome body surfing on the waves worked on our tans (and sunburns) and had some fun. After our “stressful” day we had a fun little scrimmage game which involved the girls’ team with the help of the coaches playing the boys team. Jordan stunned Mike with an amazing display of prowess between the posts. The fun little game ended in a tie, which meant that Mike did not have to buy the entire boys team supper. Afterwards we headed back to the school for supper and some down time before bed. Tomorrow is our last day in Teramo before leaving early Saturday morning.

Day #1 - AIR PLANE DAY!!!!!
It was a long day and the air plane food was really really bad. Everyone was really tired. Only one of our flights was delayed (montreal-rome). Camrie lost her jacket. . . oops mom.
Day #2- ROME!!!!!!!
We arrived at 10 am. It was super hot and humid. Luggage took forever, but finally came. We ate food across the street then we walked around Rome taking the metro to the Catacombs (scary place) (lots of tombs). Then we took a bus to the Spanish steps, the wedding cake and Trevi fountain, all the while taking lots of pictures. However Mike took us back after seeing the coliseum because we were all very tired and maybe just a little whiney Then we went to the hard rock cafe. Outside there was a crazy Italian bug. Through dinner we watched Uruguay play Ghana in world cup. The game went to a really intense shoot out. Italians really love their soccer.
Day #3-
Woke up at 9. Only one room woke up on time. Fail. We took the metro to the Vatican. The out side is very pretty you know. Oh and Mackenzie made it on and off the train. We were all very proud. Nobody got lost. Ate some nice Italian pizza and hopped on a bus to Pineto. Upon arrival we got to go to the beach all the while coach set up our beds at the school. Unfortunately people got stung by “imaginary” jellyfish. We were very fortunate to have such a nice school though. Mike gave us the late talk that day and sent us on a run. (IT WAS AWESOME). Oh and chase lost his glasses, but found them, so no worries.
Day #4- START OF TOURNAMENT
The girls had there first game, 22-4, for Denmark..... As for the guys, they lost 12-16 to Poland. Both teams put in a lot of effort for being ridiculously nervous. Our first international game was pretty exciting though. The guys goalie, Jordan, did absolutely fabulous. For the rest of the day we relaxed, partly on the beach. At night there were opening ceremonies. They were insane. The crowds of players were huge. Everybody loved Canada, especially the Lebanese who just so happened to be around us in the crowd. Everyone showed a lot of spirit and represented Canada well. We got announced into the main square after being part of a parade through town. Everyone felt it was an unreal and indescribable experience. Another update on Mackenzie, he volunteered to hold the flag for the ceremony! How exciting, yet later he was spotted by the coaches with his i pod in and on. Way to be
By now team nick names are as follows:
Jason – Jayson DeRulo
Mackenzie – Maxipad, Maxuss, Joey Moss , big mack, oj
Emily L – Bambi
Cole (short one) – Marshall
Lydia – Coach and Monty
Cole Armstrong – Elmo (ask him why or check youtube)
Taylor h – Justin bieber
David – Mr Teramo
Craig – g money
Mike –cuddles (don’t ask), rabbi rock, M-dawwwwwwwwg
Cam – Joey moss the 2nd (but he wouldn’t know cause he doesn’t listen)
Day #5- Guys- Played Two Denmark teams. 12-16 and 10-11. So close on the last game, losing in the final seconds. Losing both games but starting to find a rhythm. The boys started to get over their nerves and learn to play real handball.
Girls- Lost against two Denmark teams as well. However the girls played their heart out and started to see improvement.
Back at the school, the guys thought they were clever enough to trick the trickster Mike (rabbi rock) and hid Big Cole in a garbage can telling mike that it held the world’s biggest cockroach. However Mike being the true mastermind of them all opened the garbage can knowing someone was in there and tried to throw his water on Cole. Cole tried to block the water but grabbed Mikes finger... which is now huge and probably broken... way to go Big Cole!
Speaking of cockroaches some of the ladies left decided to feed the local wildlife by leaving fruit in their garbage which drew out a bunch of cockroaches..... the guys had their hands full with catching cockroaches and listening to Mike scream in fear haha.
